Uly hadn’t come in by the normal route along his new Silk Road, so he didn’t have a chance to stop and greet Tanis Dragon or Wardog Charlie in passing. Conductor DJ Gross had always taken his responsibilities seriously and diplomatically, once he knew who Uly was, so those had been pleasant breaks. Wardog Charlie was Wardog Charlie.

There was a new road being born. One that connected Saari to Daicia to any of several spots on the far side of the Ononguli interior, once word got out that it was safe.

And it would be safe for travelers. Uly was pretty certain that he had impressed those details on the folks at Daicia.

He could always go back and reinforce the lesson.

But he was over Rayzian today. Resting at the outer marker with Tiikeri on a close flank, Nubia protecting the smaller ship rather than the other way around.

Challenges had gone out and replies sent. He knew he was late arriving, but he had a pretty good reason. Several, in fact.

“Uly, Fire Diamond on channel five,” Haydar announced. “Lukyan.”

“I’ll take it in my office,” Uly decided. “What’s the lag?”

“About two seconds, but we’re cleared to head inward, so it will slowly decrease over the next several hours. Unless you were in a hurry.”

“Absolutely not,” Uly said as he rose. “You and Drew work with Eskil and his crew to get us in and settled. I’m presuming we’ll take a shuttle to the surface, once Anna initiates the larger process that our arrival triggers.”

“Indubitably,” Haydar chuckled.

Uly got to his desk and settled, pausing for a quick breath before he brought the line live and waited.

Lukyan looked more relaxed than Uly remembered seeing him at any point in the last several years. Hopefully, that was a good sign.

“Welcome, Uly,” Lukyan said. “I’m guessing you went and socially conquered yet another species on the way here?”

He was smiling, but he had been there to watch the Khet, the Ononguli, and the Isann come around.

“They are the Samuur, Lukyan,” Uly replied. “They arrived at Bastion after you left.”

Uly proceeded to walk him through the first meeting, the three missions, Saari, and the present.

“Wait wait wait,” Lukyan broke in at one point. “Daicia?”

“Facing Tharn and Rebosk on the Ononguli border,” Uly nodded. “Right at the edge of Sector Twenty-One.”

“And you just dropped a battalion of your Samuur friends on the place as station security?” Lukyan confirmed with a whistle.

“While reminding them that I was coming directly to Rayzian to talk to Anna and tell her everything,” Uly completed the thought. “And that failure to behave would make me a permanent enemy.”

Lukyan blanched almost orange at that, but Uly supposed that the man understood the depth and power of such a threat.

“But you’re here now?” Lukyan confirmed.

“For the moment,” Uly replied. “Obviously, some major events to take care of. And some updates for Anna and the Horde that might change a few equations.”

“What about that other ship?” he asked. “The one you sent looking for the folks that built Nubia?”

“It will be months until I hear anything, I’m presuming.
